To consider the relationship between UTIs and a strong smell of urine, the Canadian researchers surveyed 331 parents of children aged 1 month to 3 years were examined by suspected UTIs.
Research shows a strong smell of urine is a risk factor most closely associated with UTIs - 57% of them tested positive for UTIs have a strong smell of urine compared to only 32% of children without UTIs.
Despite the strong smell of urine can increase the likelihood that children with UTIs diagnosed, but the researchers admit that this symptom alone is not sufficient for diagnosis.
The pediatrician agreed that a strong smell of urine can be a sign of the young children who have UTIs. UTIs in children may manifest differently depending on the age of the child. Young children often complain of pain or heat when urinating. Particularly difficult to diagnose UTIs in children with fever is the only symptom.
The findings are published online in the journal Pediatrics on 2/4.
